The power of reading

We’re all back here on Whidbey for the August residency. It’s great to see people in the flesh again, after months of online conversation. One of our visiting faculty is Matt de la Peña, whose book The Living we read at the beginning of last term. He’s a great speaker in person, funny and wise. He did a reading from new work in progress, and it was awesome.

Here’s an essay he wrote for NPR.org about the power of reading. It’s a real thing, this power, not an abstraction. There’s a Before and an After with reading. If for some reason you think reading is less than essential (in which case I don’t even know why you’re hanging out on this blog) let this piece convince you otherwise.
